Kulturbrücken once again presents Dobranotch in Mannheim, this time at the Jewish Community Center.
...energetic, cheerful and ludicrously virtuosic.
A lone tuba sets the beat and makes one thing immediately clear: even in their 24th year of existence, Dobranotch have not become a bit quieter. The band from Russia mixes a self-confident sound of Klezmer, Balkan, Gypsy and doesn't even shy away from Rammstein.
Now DOBRANOTCH have released a new album, "Vander Ikh Mir Lustik", which they recorded in exile in Germany with a new line-up. And so another instrument has been added, because in addition to the traditional violin, clarinet, saxophone, banjo, tuba and drums, a hammered dulcimer now also finds its well-deserved place on stage.
However, DOBRANOTCH was never just a Russian band. Founded in 1997 in Nantes, France, its members originally came from Russia, but also from Moldova, Libya, France, Ukraine ... Prolonged tours across Europe have given the musicians so many different impulses that they can justifiably be described as a genuine world music band, mixing klezmer with Balkan beats, Yiddish traditionals with Slavic soul, wedding with funeral, DIKANDA with BRATSCH ... Their musical mix is absolutely unique, sung in numerous languages, in Yiddish of course, but also in Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish, English and even German.
With their new album, DOBRANOTCH celebrate their original musical roots and continue to impress in their 28th year with this irresistible and lively mix of Jewish, Moldavian, Roma, Caucasian, Ukrainian and Serbian melodies.
...full of energy, cheerful and ludicrously virtuosic.
The band has been touring the world for over 25 years and has recorded over a dozen albums. And despite the difficult situation for them, the musicians say: "The journey continues - and we invite you to share our joy".
DOBRANOTCH sound just as convincing and captivating in small clubs and at large festivals as they do on classical theater or even philharmonic stages. And often enough, the musicians simply come down from the stage after the concert and play one or two more pieces in the hall or foyer in the middle of the audience, just as their predecessors did a hundred or two hundred or even more years ago.
The band is also not afraid of really different genres: their klezmer version of Rammstein's hit "Du Hast" became a real YouTube hit with three million views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C04TKCce8s

The band has left Russia and is currently touring Europe. 2023 was not an easy year for Dobranotch, the klezmer band from St. Petersburg: after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, some of them left the country and went into exile - to Germany. Not an easy decision for the musicians.
"We left family, friends and fans behind without the certainty of ever seeing them again," writes the band.
And yet: Dobranotch never let it get them down. "Vander ikh mir lustik" is the title of their new album, a lively mix of traditional songs from Eastern Europe and an unsparing look at the world.

PRESS
"For the second and certainly not the last time, the sensational Ukrainian-Russian-Moldovan Balkan Gypsy band Dobranotch caused a sensation at the Steimke in Uslar. If you weren't there, you really missed out, because these spirited musicians not only demonstrated how virtuoso international understanding works, they also taught us how to produce analog techno ... "

"Dobranotch know all about having fun in difficult times: With their wild, frenetic mix of klezmer, Balkan, brass and dub, every soul is embraced and made to dance.
The wild dervishes mix Balkan sounds with klezmer and gypsy and have already performed in more than twenty countries. The band is constantly reinventing itself and hasn't slowed down a bit since its beginnings."
