Dominik Geis studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Marcel Odenbach. His works have been awarded the NRW.Bank Art Prize and the Förderpreis der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, among others. Dominik Geis questions the different faces of masculinity in his works. His photographic and video works show an examination of male body ideals and reveal how power is expressed and inscribed through the body.
The exhibition "I want to Breker free" examines the National Socialist visual language. Based on the song "I Want to Break Free" by Queen, the title articulates the desire to free oneself from fixed viewing regimes: from the narratives of propaganda as well as from the certainties of seemingly objective observation. In particular, the exhibition asks what role (homo)erotic image codes played in the staging of National Socialist masculinity and how social norms and art-historical evaluations determine the way we deal with these images.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with texts by Christina Benninghaus, Maria Lutter and Roland Nachtigäller.
