In the organizer's words:

Anton Webern's Passacaglia op. 1, the "journeyman's piece" of his training with Arnold Schönberg, marks a real ear-opener for this concert evening with its baroque formal framework and late romantic orchestral sound. This is followed by one of the most moving moments in concert literature: Alban Berg's Violin Concerto. Dutch violinist Niek Baar lends this work - a requiem for the young Manon Gropius - a fragile, profound presence with his special sense of sound. The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Katharina Wincor, then builds a bridge from the Second Viennese School back to classical-romantic Vienna. The 5th Symphony by the 19-year-old Franz Schubert fills the concert hall with its dance-like lightness and melodic beauty - a light, elegant counterpoint to the intensity of the first half of the program.
