Music by Karlheinz Stockhausen can be heard every day in Cologne. Every day at midday, the carillon at Cologne City Hall plays one of the 12 "Zodiac" melodies by the avant-garde grand master. According to Stockhausen, each piece characterizes the special qualities of people born under the respective zodiac sign. Is it the reference to the reality of life or the simplicity of the musical miniatures that make the "Zodiac" cycle Stockhausen's most popular work? From Cologne to the Iberian Peninsula: Isaac Albéniz was inspired by Spanish cities and regions with their cultural and musical peculiarities to compose his "Suite española", a kaleidoscopic homage to his homeland, rather than the signs of the zodiac. From Spain to Prague: Antonín Dvořák's String Quintet in G major is often succinctly referred to as the "Double Bass Quintet" due to its extravagant instrumentation. Unlike most string quintets, in which the viola or cello are doubled, the double bass provides a mini string orchestra sound - but always with Dvořák's unmistakable charm!
