Dürers Nashorn

A concert featuring Joachim Heßler (piano) & Marlon Thüer (French horn)

Albrecht Dürer never once in his life laid eyes on a “Rhinocerus”—as he himself called his woodcut—and yet, with his depiction of a rhinoceros, he created a work of art of world-renowned fame.
The Norwegian composer Trygve Madsen drew inspiration from Dürer’s work to create a humorous, fantastical, and innovative composition for the French horn that blends classical tonal forms with modern elements
. He is called the “Flemish Brahms”: Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868–1952), born in Antwerp, ranks among the great unknown
composers of the Romantic era. His particularly beautiful, lyrical “Pastorale” for French horn and piano will be performed, offering listeners the chance to rediscover it
. Richard Strauss, another master of the Romantic era, is also on the program. And Strauss was truly well-versed in the French horn.
His father, in fact, was a virtuoso on this instrument. So the son wrote the Concerto in E-flat Major specifically for his father. It is considered particularly successful and will surely be performed superbly by the award-winning horn player. Marlon Thüer (French horn) and Dr. Hans-Joachim Heßler (piano).
