The orphan Andreas Egger (Ivan Gustafik) can't exactly talk about having a carefree childhood on a remote farm in the Austrian Alps. Nobody knows exactly how old he is when he arrives at the farm of Kranzstocker (Andreas Lust) around 1900. And the farmer doesn't have much use for Andreas either, making him do unpleasant work and rewarding him with violence. Only Ahnl (Marianne Sägebrecht) seems to have a soft spot for the boy. That's why Andreas (Stefan Gorski), now an adult, is so sad when she dies. But now there's nothing keeping him on the hated farm and from building his own life with the love of his life, Marie (Julia Franz Richter). But their happiness is short-lived. Hitler's Germany plunges the world into war and Andreas is forced to serve in the army until he finally ends up as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union. There is not much left of the life he once dreamed of, but he can be close to his Marie one last time... Based on the novel of the same name by Robert Seethaler.
