After enduring decades of incapacitation and inhumane conditions in the long-term psychiatric clinic Kloster Blankenburg, former patients joined forces with artists in 1986 to create a place where they could have their say, be heard and be seen - as people, as visual artists, as actors: The Blaumeier Atelier.
They found an artistic home here and developed into virtuoso and often anarchic artists who initially translated their view of the world into images with material simplicity. In the anniversary exhibition "A Good Start", these works meet pictures created by people who are also taking their first steps in the visual arts. A good generation after the dissolution of long-term psychiatry, the young Blaumeier group "Die Blaue Sau" is part of this exhibition, a good start for them too. Facing each other and at the same time together, they span 40 years of Blaumeier art and impress with great directness and concentration on the design idea.
This exhibition is a deep bow to the people who were locked away in long-term psychiatric clinics until the 1980s and a tribute to freedom and self-determination in the present and future.
More than 100 works of art by over 35 artists are on display: Graffiti, comics, written images, stop-motion animated films, etchings and free painting with acrylic paint, pencils and oil pastels. During the exhibition period, a supporting program with guided tours, theater performances, film screenings, readings and writing workshops will take place regularly on Tuesdays.
