Ora's son Ofer volunteers for a military mission in Lebanon. The procedure is familiar in Israel: three members of the army ring the doorbell and bring the bad news: son, daughter, husband or wife have been killed. To escape this news, Ora flees to the seclusion of the mountains. She sets off, with her childhood sweetheart Avram, Ora's biological father, a veteran addicted to pills and severely scarred by the Yom Kippur War, in tow. She tells : of her love for two men who have been in her life since her early youth, of anger and tenderness, despair and passion - and of her son Ofer. She tries to keep him alive through incessant remembrance, to banish misfortune. As she wanders through Israel and the landscape of her memory, we encounter her son, the two important men in her life, the war and everything that has remained and is left over from three lives.

In his story, author and peace activist David Grossman reflects one of the great conflicts of the present in minimalist experiences of everyday life. In countless moments, he shows how the lives of his characters are inextricably intertwined with politics and war. He tells of love and passion, of male friendship, of everyday life in a country worn down by violence and fear and makes a convincing and rousing plea against war and violence.
