The state elections for Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia are coming up in the fall. It is expected that the AfD will receive over 30% of the vote and emerge as the strongest force in the elections for the first time. An increasing number of the party's sub-organizations are under observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and are classified as suspected right-wing extremist groups. These developments raise the question of what consequences a possible election victory would have for our country, what the high level of approval is an expression of and how this should be dealt with. Is the rise of the AfD a sign of a healthy or ailing democracy? Should a party ban be sought or should it be beaten on the democratic field with better arguments? A discussion between the historian and writer Per Leo and the lawyer and journalist Heribert Prantl about the fragile foundations of democracy, friend-foe distinctions and the limits of discourse.
