The influence of impressionist composers on the harmonic world of modern jazz piano is not without precedent. Chris Gall's musical thinking and sensibilities were also shaped by what the French composers Ravel, Debussy and Satie left us. On his album Impressionists Improvised, the pianist does justice to the originals, but also intersperses the original pieces with rough edges and unexpected twists. He composed some of the pieces himself - in the spirit of his role models.
