In Al-Andalus, the empire in southern Spain that was ruled by Muslims for centuries, there was an almost unparalleled coexistence of cultures and religions that influenced the entire Iberian Peninsula. The music of clarinettist and singer Carola Ortiz is clearly Iberian and thus a meeting of Orient, Occident, Jewish sounds and Gitano heritage. Ortiz and multi-instrumentalist Àlex Guitart (saz, Turkish lute, cajón, tombak) tell stories from the southernmost part of the continent from a female perspective, transporting us to the rich history and present of their country.

Ortiz and Guitart adorn our new series, Einstein's World, which focuses on music from all parts of the planet. Carola Ortiz, daughter of a jazz musician and a theater specialist, will probably perform pieces from Cantareras in her concert, which was voted one of the best world music albums in 2024, and certainly also material from a new work called Enllà, which is based on poems by Dario Olaortua.
