Elisabeth Kufferath - violin, viola
Program:
Kati Agócs: "Promise" for violin solo
Bernd Alois Zimmermann: Sonata for viola "... to the song of an angel"
Johann Sebastian Bach: Sonata No. 3 for solo violin in C major, BWV 1005
A courageous and intimate solo program by the widely traveled and yet very approachable violinist Elisabeth Kufferath. The composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann sees "birth and death, becoming and passing away, and above all love - everything that moves a human heart" in the smallest, most intimate form of music-making: the solo sonata. Bach's work for a single violin contains the whole world of human destiny and the entire range of emotions. He wrote the six solo works after the sudden death of his beloved wife Barbara in 1720. Bach sought solace from his loneliness in music and ambiguously titled them "Sei solo" - which translates either as "six solos (for violin)" or from the Italian: "you are alone". Elisabeth Kufferath embarks on this journey through the inner self and allows her instrument to become her voice - a voice that speaks to us from the depths of the human soul.
