Photo exhibition of the legendary Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt at the Leica Gallery.
Elliott Erwitt (*1928 - 2023) has long been a photographic legend, his visual humor incomparable. Whether people or dogs, celebrities or strangers: Elliott Erwitt often tells simple but universal stories in his rich body of work. His motifs are direct and entertaining, sensitive and pointed, American and cosmopolitan.
In 2023, he was honored with the Leica Hall of Fame Award for his life's work. 30 of his favorite pictures from seven decades are now on display in Düsseldorf.
Erwitt's photographs strike an emotional chord with the viewer, but mostly draw attention to more far-reaching, profound ideological
considerations. Bringing all this together in a single moment, in a single image, is perhaps the secret of his photographs. In the
best sense, they are witty. "You can find pictures everywhere. The thing is to notice them and then create them. You just have to be
what's going on around you and get excited about humanity and the human comedy," is one of the brilliant storyteller's
recipe of the brilliant storyteller, who likes to be a little bit deep when he talks about his work: "You just have to have the modest ability to bring order to a motif, to shape an image or to recognize and reproduce moods. Occasionally you also end up with a picture that says something. That is enough. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be in the right place at the right moment."
Without a doubt, he has succeeded a thousand times over. With his unmistakable view of the world, he has repeatedly given his audience unforgettable moments.
The son of Russian emigrants, Elliott Erwitt was born in Paris in 1928. He emigrated to America with his family in 1939.
In 1948 he began working as a professional photographer in New York and in 1953 became a member of the Magnum agency, of which he was to become president several times. From 1970, he also began making films and working for television. Over the course of his career, he published more than 25 books and won many important international awards over the course of 45 years. In November 2023, Erwitt, one of the best-known and busiest photographers of our time, passed away in his native New York at the age of 95.
