The Munich label Squama presents two of its most exciting acts, who will be sharing the stage for the first time this evening.

Enji: "I am Ulaan" - these are the words that begin the album "Ulaan" by Mongolian singer Enji. The nickname given to her by her family serves as a manifesto of her own humanity. On her second LP on the Squama label, Enji explores life-affirming forms of expression. As on the previous album "Ursgal (2021), influences from jazz, folk and traditional Mongolian music are combined with Enji's unique voice, which scales new heights on "Ulaan". Her lyrics deal with dreams, longing and the meaning of seemingly meaningless moments, framed in the sound and unique rhythm of the Mongolian language.

Fazer: To approach Fazer's music, jazz is not enough as a single genre description. The Munich band's aesthetic is characterized by a wide variety of influences. These range from the experimental pop music of Talk Talk to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti, the Krautrock of Can and the dub techno of Rhythm & Sound. The latter in particular were very important for the genesis of Fazer, both sonically and stylistically. The fact that Fazer's music cannot be causally assigned to one place and sound is also due to the special band constellation with two drummers, who deal a lot with music from regions where rhythm and polyrhythms are more important than in Europe. For the band, this is a reservoir of learning and a stimulus to define jazz as a space of possibility.
