THE EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Over the past 20 years, the students' desire to perform concerts for a wider public audience outside the walls of the university in an "examination-free zone" has become a lively tradition firmly anchored in Leipzig's musical life. The happy collaboration between the Leipzig Bach Festival, the GRASSI Musical Instrument Museum at Leipzig University and the Department of Early Music at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig enables students to celebrate their annual Early Music Festival in the wonderful rooms of the Musical Instrument Museum and in the professional setting of the Leipzig Bach Festival.

The festival opens on Friday evening with a large, mostly staged production. On the following Saturday, there will be 2 Wandelkonzerte with 6-8 individual concerts and smaller musical contributions from the students. The children's concert between the two Wandelkonzerte is a semi-staged performance with dance, stories and, of course, lots of music!

The academy concerts always conclude the Early Music Festival. In the academies, lecturers, students and graduates of the university work together to create a concert program that adds another facet to the theme of the Early Music Festival.
