OPENING CONCERT

Complete performance of the Orgelbüchlein by Johann Sebastian Bach

To kick off the Moab Organ Festival, Gerhard Löffler will play Johann Sebastian Bach's Orgelbüchlein in a complete performance. With his 46 chorale preludes, Bach created a concentrated cycle that musically structures the church year and at the same time represents a compendium of his early organ art.

The Orgelbüchlein is one of the central works of organ literature - a work of study, liturgical contribution and artistic program in equal measure.

As cantor and organist at St. Jacobi Hamburg,Gerhard Löffler shapes the city's church music life. He directs the choir and the Arp Schnitger Ensemble, initiated the 30-minute organ music and founded the Arp Schnitger Festival. Bach is at the center of his repertoire - framed by works from the Old Masters to contemporary music. This year, invitations will take him to Thun in Switzerland, the Jesuit Church in Vienna, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin and three concerts in his native Hesse. As a juror, lecturer and conductor, he sets accents in the field of tension between tradition and the present.
