EVERY COURAGEOUS LIFE IS A SONG TO THE FUTURE

This fall, Temporary Gallery. Center for Contemporary Art in Cologne presents a solo exhibition by Austrian artist Ines Doujak "Every Courageous Life Is a Song to the Future" curated by Mateusz Okonski and Aneta Rostkowska.

As usual at Temporary Gallery, the exhibition is visually bold and also features the artist's latest works.

The main inspiration for the series of artworks presented in the exhibition were land defenders from around the world - activists who fight for the protection of ecosystems and the human right to a safe and healthy environment. They are the ones who face the acceleration of land grabbing with all its terrible effects: the disruption of functioning economies, monoculture agriculture, soil and biodiversity destruction, and climate change. Many of these defenders, who feel responsible for a shared future, are members of indigenous communities in the Global South who are trying to protect their ancestral lands. Many are older, replacing younger people "whose lives are still ahead of them."

Contrary to what one might expect, the exhibition does not relate directly to the struggles of the activists in a documentary fashion. It operates on a different level, returning to the sphere of the symbolic. Here, political inspiration translates into a captivating, sensual environment that draws from different aesthetic and cultural traditions.

The central element of the exhibition is an artistic parade in public space entitled "The Most Beautiful Women Are the Women of the Revolution" at the end of October this year. The aim of which is to express solidarity with female land defenders from all over the world. In the weeks following the exhibition opening, the space will host a series of meetings and workshops leading up to this collective action.
