For years, the Western world has been moving towards a permanent state of emergency. Politicians react to every new crisis and every conflict with draconian measures and increasing militarization. In his new book, Fabian Scheidler, author of the international bestseller "The End of the Megamachine", warns that this path is leading to a spiral of economic decline, political chaos and war. Fundamental democratic and social achievements are in danger of being sacrificed to a military logic that is presented as having no alternative. The welfare state is mutating into a warfare state.

But the descent into the self-destructive logic of war is by no means without alternative. In view of the dangers associated with global political upheaval, the destruction of the biosphere and the erosion of democracy, this book points to new ways of dealing with the challenges of our century. Western societies must learn to abandon their centuries-long policy of dominance in order to develop a culture of cooperation.
