Faszination Höhle

Caves have always been closely linked to human culture. Our ancestors used them as shelters. Moreover, caves have always been places of special spiritual significance. The first works of art, cave paintings, have been preserved in them. At the same time, we associate a certain threat with the dark, inaccessible formations of the underworld.
The upcoming special exhibition "Fascination Cave" is the first to be dedicated to the motif of the cave in the visual arts: from the legendary Blue Grotto on Capri, which was painted many times by the Romantics, to contemporary artists such as Verner Panton, Per Kirkeby and Mamma Andersson.
With this exhibition, the Böttcherstrasse Museums are also celebrating the 150th birthday of the builder of the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949).
The Expressionist-style building, which opened in 1927, uniquely embodies his architectural concept of striving from darkness to light: the museum's cave-like vestibule forms the inspirational starting point for the exhibition and also functions as a physically tangible leitmotif.
