Female-fronted Is Not A Genre - Punk- und Hardcore-Festival mit March, Kill Her First, The Raccoonz, Wrex und Parting Gyfts
In the organizer's words:
The punk and hardcore festival shines a spotlight on powerful female voices and bands with female members, continuing to send a confident message. Especially in the male-dominated music world, the event series aims to empower other FLINTA*s and provide a stage for their stories. And that stage will once again be at the legendary SO36. After two evenings in Berlin on October 22 and 23, the festival will then move on to its third stop on October 24 at the Faust Cultural Center in Hanover.
“Female-fronted Is Not A Genre” originally grew out of an idea by the Berlin band Kill Her First, which was founded in 2007 with an all-female lineup. Although the quintet has undergone numerous lineup changes since then, it has never lost sight of its original message: inclusivity and diversity in punk and hardcore.
Lineup:
March (punk rock and hardcore / Breda, Netherlands)
March hails from Breda, the Netherlands, and sounds like a mix of Brody Dalle and John Coffey. Loud, honest punk rock ’n’ roll that’s perfect for letting loose. The four-piece has already opened for NOFX, Descendents, Living End, and Lagwagon.
Kill Her First (melodic hardcore / Berlin)
In the twilight zone between emo and metalcore, a new name emerged in the summer of 2007: Kill Her First. Four young women from Berlin had formed a band to shake up a scene that was noticeably and overwhelmingly male-dominated. Their shared inspiration came from international bands like Hawthorne Heights, From Autumn To Ashes, Rise Against, Funeral For A Friend, and Kittie. In 2022, Kill Her First launched the “Female-fronted Is Not A Genre” festival and has since brought together exciting lineups of predominantly female-fronted bands every year, including Future Palace, Blood Command, The Pill, Saint Agnes, and Still Talk. The festival returns in October 2026, and the band will be performing new material: Their new album “Künstliche Freiheit” was released in late 2024 and continues to generate positive buzz.
The Raccoonz (Punk Rock / Erfurt)
The Raccoonz were founded in Erfurt in 2004 by Lou Polly Heyder (guitar) and Rumi Lowack (bass). Yuki Mende (vocals and guitar) and David Höche (drums) joined the band later. Musically, The Raccoonz effortlessly navigate between a sassy, cool attitude and melancholic beauty. Their songs capture the tension between youthful rebellion and intense teenage love—raw, honest, and emotional.
Wrex (Nu-Punk / Brighton, UK)
The Brighton-based duo Wrex plays electro-charged alternative rock designed to get hearts racing and fill both dance floors and mosh pits. Shades of punk, nu-metal, pop, and trance collide and fuse into a wild explosion of riffs and synth sounds, drawing from influences as diverse as While She Sleeps, Faithless, and Linkin Park. Wrex delivers a wild wall of sound with little regard for outdated musical boundaries or conventions; their creativity, joy, and emotions run wild.
Parting Gyfts (Indie and Post-Punk / Hanover)
A mix of glitter and tears—that’s Parting Gyfts. Kissed by melancholy, Parting Gyfts paint a musical landscape with a driving energy and introspective lyrics in the post-punk style. Catchy, indie-rock-influenced melodies round out the sound of this four-piece band. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to dance and cry—both on and off stage.
