Performative collage

Under the title Crowning, the artist Esther Strauß presents a statue of the Virgin Mary giving birth in Linz Cathedral in 2024. The Mother of God sitting with her legs apart in the act of giving birth draws attention to a centuries-old blank space in depictions of the Virgin Mary. Shortly afterwards, the statue is beheaded by an unknown person.

What expression does femininity find in the context of spirituality, faith and the Christian religion? Five tableaux - consisting of installative and performative elements - form a spatial collage in which the audience moves freely and adopts different perspectives. New drama, biblical narratives and feminist prayers are juxtaposed in FEMINA* and create a polyphony. FEMINA* explores the gaps, ambivalences and paradoxes in narratives about femininity and how we pass them on from generation to generation.
