A dark fairy tale set in rugged medieval Iceland and, at the same time, Björk’s acclaimed acting debut: *The Juniper Tree* (1990) by Nietzchka Keene is a long-overlooked gem of European arthouse cinema.
In her pre-release concert, Japanese composer and pianist Midori Hirano presents a new live soundtrack to the forgotten arthouse fairy-tale film *The Juniper Tree*, which also marks the young Björk’s first film appearance. With electronic textures, piano compositions, and finely balanced soundscapes, Hirano reinterprets the film as a contemporary sonic experience and establishes a sensitive dialogue with the poetic visual language of American filmmaker Nietzchka Keene. Filmed in Iceland, this austere black-and-white film weaves together mythology, witchcraft, and the female experience into a haunting, atmospherically dense reflection on misogyny and patriarchal violence.
Heroines of Sound presents the German premiere of Midori Hirano’s new live film score for *The Juniper Tree* (1990). The composition was commissioned for Videodroom 2025 in co-production with VIERNULVIER and Film Fest Gent and will be performed live in Germany for the first time to accompany the restored 4K version of the film. The concert will be accompanied by an introduction with Wouter Vanhaelemeesch from the Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER.
