Accompanying the theater performances and installations of WHEN MEMORIES MEET, two documentary films by Malaysian filmmaker Kek-huat Lau (Taipei | Hong Kong) will be shown at Museum Fünf Kontinente as part of the Spielart Theater Festival 2023:
Absent without leave
Taiwan and Malaysia 2016, 83 minutes
Fuzhou, Malay and Mandarin with English subtitles.
Starting with his often absent father, Kek-huat Lau deals with his grandfather, whose existence is only remembered by a portrait photo. A communist fighter for decolonization and independence, his life has been erased from the country's official historiography. The film reports on the same events as A NOTIONAL HISTORY, but focuses on the conflict between political action and individual needs.
Inside the red brick wall
Hong Kong 2020, 88 minutes
Cantonese with English subtitles
In mid-November 2019, a group of protesters against the extradition law in Hong Kong had retreated to the fortress-like Polytechnic University - police blocked all exits. The film documents several (mostly) failed escape attempts and finally the dramatic hours in which the protesters debated the crucial question of whether to make a final escape attempt or surrender.
The event is a cooperation with the Spielart Theater Festival. It is sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
Admission is free.
