With Beatrix Kersten & Maria Weissenböck
Talk: Claudia Dathe & Franziska Davies
Live music: Ganna Gryniva
The poet and painter Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was born a serf and was sent into exile for a poem critical of the regime. For Ukrainians, he is "Luther, Kant and Goethe in one" (Yuri Andrukhovych) and the literary voice of freedom ("Fly my song, my wild torment" // by Beatrix Kesten). Gender pay gap, domestic violence and late motherhood: Lesja Ukrajinka (1871-1913) wrote early on about feminist issues that are still highly topical today, and in the banned Ukrainian language ("Am Meer" // Engl. by Maria Weissenböck). The "Ukrainian Library" (Wallstein Verlag // edited by Claudia Dathe) will publish a total of 15 groundbreaking classics of Ukrainian literature from fall 2025. Tanya Malyarchuk and Yuri Andrukhovych will present the first two volumes - accompanied by music from Ganna Gryniva, one of
"one of the most impressive singers and musicians on the European jazz and world music scene". Ö1 Radio
