Florence's old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The application affirmed that the "world's greatest accumulation of universally known works of art is located here". The same applies to architecture: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Basilica di San Lorenzo with its mighty domes were the prelude to the Renaissance. This was followed by other architectural highlights such as the Pazzi Chapel, the Foundling Hospital, Santa Maria Novella and the Palazzo Pitti with the Boboli Gardens, which will also be presented in detail in the lecture.
