Munich has recently acquired a very special memory: the Dritte*Orte Archive collects disappeared, existing and future places where people feel at home - from the legendary Elvira photo studio to the chess club on Münchner Freiheit. In the past, encounters often came about quite naturally - an established pub culture, newspaper kiosks, public baths, Kramer stores, mixed-use apartment blocks or department stores. Many things were very personal.
There is a lot of talk about meeting places and liveable cities, but for whom does this actually mean what? Which places do we remember, what is forgotten? Who were or are the people behind these places? Where do people still meet today? What ideas, examples and visions are there for the future? In all of this, you and your own view of the city are in demand!
Whether niche, grown or everyday places in Munich - everyone can take part, whether as a contemporary witness, idea provider or urban researcher. They have grown, are not intentional and are created by the people you find there. They don't exist a second time. And yet they disappear, are displaced, give up. When they go, emptiness remains.
Together we want to create a living archive of these places and make visible what existed, exists and should exist.
Do you remember a third place that is no longer there and should be remembered?
Do you know of one or would you like your place to be documented while it still exists?
Do you have ideas for places that would do this city good or do you know of projects/collectives/initiatives?
Would you like to get to know Munich and its special people and places personally?
Then you can take part - as an individual, with a project, with others, as an association, initiative or collective. Even if you don't have much time. Whether it's a researched text, captured memories, photos, videos or interviews, a letter addressed to the location, 3D-scanned memorabilia or scanned quotes - it's the diversity of the contributions that makes the archive special. This creates something special: an archive from below. In contrast to institutionalized archives, it is those who participate who decide what is remembered and how. It invites people to be curious, to appreciate places and their people and to come into contact with them. The archive can, will and will never be complete. But it should grow. With you!
Sounds interesting?
Then write us a message (hello@dritteortearchiv.com) or come to one of the open "Forscher:innentreffen" meetings. There we will talk about the project, look at the urban research backpack together and how we can make existing places that have disappeared or visions for future places visible on the map in the digital archive (dritteortearchiv.com). We collect and exchange ideas. You can bring ideas or places that you think are important. Of course, you can also just come along, listen and see if and how you would like to participate. It will be nice!
