Molecular gene scissors, also known as CRISPR/Cas technology, have greatly accelerated basic and applied research in medicine and plant research. They enable the targeted modification of the blueprint of plants, which makes various applications possible. The technology has already produced market-ready products. For example, potatoes have been modified so that the chips or French fries made from them contain less carcinogenic acrylamide. Dr. Götz Hensel (Heinrich Heine University) will present the basics of the technology, while young scientist Susanne Vollmer (Heinrich Heine University) will provide insights into her current research.
