Forum Bundesbank: Der digitale Euro

The Deutsche Bundesbank regularly offers interesting lectures on current issues relating to the monetary system and central bank policy. Therefore, an event of the series "Forum Bundesbank" will take place on May 23, 2024 at 18:00 in the Cologne branch of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

The topic is: "The digital euro: seizing Europe's opportunities". The speaker will be Mr. Daniel Elster from the Central Digital Euro Division of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

In recent years, internet giants and tech companies have tried to gain a foothold in the area of payment transactions: Facebook with its "Libra" project or Paypal with its US dollar stablecoin. Against this backdrop, central banks have been considering how they could contribute to digital money and secure, efficient and innovative payment transactions. Since 2021, the Eurosystem has been working on the future of payment methods with the digital euro. The digital euro would give people the opportunity to pay electronically with central bank money throughout the euro area and in almost all everyday payment situations - be it at the checkout, among friends and relatives or when making purchases online.

In his presentation, Mr. Elster will discuss the current status of the digital euro and the way forward. He will also shed light on the benefits and potential uses of the digital euro for citizens.

Afterwards, visitors will be invited to discuss the topic with the expert.
