In the exhibition "I <3 Moldova", students from Bremen University of the Arts explore the different realities of life in a country that is one of the least visited in Europe. During a two-week excursion to the Republic of Moldova, they created thirteen independent photographic series that enter into a dialog with each other in this exhibition.
The title deliberately quotes the language of global tourism advertising - a symbol of the standardization and marketing of places - and transfers it into a new context. Instead of iconic sights or idealized landscapes, the works focus on the unspectacular, the everyday: on encounters, working and living realities, on urban and rural spaces that are barely visible in the global stream of images. In doing so, they pose questions about representation and perception: which images of a country shape our thinking - and which are missing when a place largely disappears from the visual map of Europe?
The result is a polyphonic collection of subjective perspectives that neither romanticizes nor exoticizes Moldova, but takes it seriously as a social, cultural and political space of experience. Despite different approaches, all the series share a common experience: the hospitality that the students encountered on their journey - and which is reflected in many of the images as a quiet, unifying undertone.
The exhibition "I <3 Molvoda" runs from 11.12.2025 up to and including 27.02.2026 in the gallery in the foyer of the Bremen Chamber of Employees. It is a cooperation between the Bremen University of the Arts, the Bremen Chamber of Employees and Freelens, funded by the Stiftung West-Östliche Begegnungen.
