Peace Through International Courts? Current Wars and the Crisis in International Law
Two renowned international law experts reflect on the current state of war and the crisis in international law from a historical perspective and seek answers to resolve the present crisis. Are there instruments of international law that could lead to peace? Is the international criminal justice system a toothless tiger and a pawn of political leaders? Who decides on war and peace—the law or governments?
The Fritz Bauer Forum, in collaboration with the Institute for Peacekeeping Law and International Humanitarian Law (IFHV/RUB), has once again invited the Spanish juristDr. Juan Garcés—advisor to Chilean President Dr. Salvador Allende Gossens and prosecutor in the Pinochet case (1996), recipient of theRight Livelihood Award(1999), to Bochum once again. He will be joined in the discussion by the director of the IFHV,Prof. Dr. Pierre Thierlbörger, who holds a professorship in Public Law and International Law at RUB and whose research focuses, among other things, on the “essence” of human rights.
