Lord Mountbatten and his wife Edwina arrive in Delhi in 1947. As Viceroy, Mountbatten is tasked with granting independence to the British crown colony. No fewer than 500 Indian servants work in his palace, including the young Hindu Jeet, who unexpectedly meets his former flame, the beautiful Muslim Aalia. It is a forbidden love, because a union between members of opposing religions is out of the question. When Mountbatten founds the new states of India and Pakistan, serious unrest breaks out.
