In the organizer's words:
Countess, refugee, nun - Tisa von der Schulenburg (1903-2001) was many things, above all a chronicler of lived dignity. Her biography leads from Berlin and Paris via exile in London to the Ruhr region and shapes a body of work that shows people in exceptional situations - as actors, not as victims.
The special exhibition "Tisa von der Schulenburg - The Empathic Gaze" combines her life and work in a tour through four themes: Mining, Holocaust, Flight, Exclusion. On display are drawings, woodcuts and sculptures. Rarely shown works are also selected from over 5,000 pieces.
The exhibition invites visitors to understand empathy as an attitude - to look, listen and take responsibility.
