Ganz schön Jazz mit Juliana Blumenschein Quintett

Which voices move and inspire us? The German-Brazilian singer and musician Juliana Blumenschein loves songs full of joie de vivre and poetry, resistance, and solidarity. With great intensity and a keen sensibility, she blends the diverse styles of jazz and Brazilian music—including samba, bossa nova, baião, and ixejá. She interprets and improvises. And above all, she sings her own songs. Carried by her warm voice and the electrifying sound of her band. On her new album, “Constelação Feminina,” Juliana beautifully bridges the gap from music history to the present. “Constelação Feminina” is a tribute to the works of Brazilian female composers from the past 130 years—to icons such as Chiquinha Gonzaga and Dona Ivone Lara. The album is imbued with the energy of these women, whom Juliana brings into the present through her arrangements. In addition, Juliana Blumenschein has created new songs that carry this creative charisma forward. She collaborated with established female artists from the music scene in Salvador da Bahia who are also her friends. And she wrote solo pieces for herself. This is how her “Constelação Feminina”—her constellation of the feminine—came to be. Juliana has created a concept album in which she subtly explores history, community, and emotional worlds. Juliana pours all these emotions—the depth and euphoria, the gentle doubt, and the budding hope—into her music, especially when performing live. With her quintet, she has already performed across the country in clubs, theaters, and at festivals—from Bamberg to Berlin, from Weimar to Cologne. “I love the variety on stage. I enjoy sharing good vibes with the audience,” says Juliana. “And every now and then, a sense of heaviness is allowed to come through. My goal is for people to feel something.” And they certainly do. Music that makes you open—in the best sense of the word—to beauty, dance, togetherness, and to yourself.
