Gem Jar

Founded in Cologne in 2025, Gem Jar brings together three distinctive voices from the international improvisation scene. Anna Größbrink (double bass), Matthew Ryals (modular synthesizer), and Jonas Engel (saxophone) engage in an open musical dialogue in which sound, noise, and silence coexist on equal footing.

Using extended playing techniques, prepared instruments, and electronic soundscapes, they create dense, surprising sonic spaces—at times fragile and focused, at other times raw and explosive. The music transcends stylistic boundaries and thrives on spontaneous interaction, curiosity, and collective exploration.

The three musicians look back on many years of concert performances in Europe, Asia, and North America and combine their individual artistic styles to form a trio that is as distinctive as it is captivating.
