Our cities reflect who was allowed to make decisions—and who was left out of the process. Many urban structures are still based on plans designed for a small, privileged group: wealthy, white, full-time employed, able-bodied, male, cisgender. But what happens when other realities of life—from caregiving and mobility restrictions to racial discrimination or poverty—find no place in the urban landscape?

This feminist city tour invites you to bring these gaps to light. Together, we’ll ask: Who is included—and who is excluded—by urban planning? Where does inequality manifest itself through implicit or active exclusion in everyday life? And what might a city look like that is oriented toward the needs of everyone—rather than just the ideas of a few?

Using specific locations in Hamburg as examples, we’ll explore access to public infrastructure, representation in the urban landscape, safety in public spaces, and environmental (in)justice as expressions of intersectional discrimination. The walking tour offers new perspectives on a city that could be more caring, more equitable, and a better place to live—for everyone.

“As a woman, my everyday experiences in the city are deeply gendered. My gender identity shapes the way I move through the city, how I go about my daily life, and the options available to me… My body is the site of my lived experiences, where my identity, my history, and the places I have lived are inscribed within me, affect my body, and leave an imprint on it.”
— Leslie Kern, Feminist City, 2020
