GENERATION Y PUNK – UPDATE ON A SUBCULTURE: “On Fanzines, Fascists, and Gen Y” + Talk “Just Do It – How Left-Wing Subculture Comes Alive Through Active Participation” with Ronny and Ronja, authors of the documentary.

Ronja and Ronny from Plastic Bomb, with the support of the editing team—Sévérine, Katharina, and Johannes—filmed the documentary “Generation Y Punk – Update on a Subculture.” The film explores DIY punk in Germany between 2000 and 2020 and the impact of digitalization and the internet on a scene that had long operated purely in the analog realm.

There will be interviews, old video footage, and lots of “baby punk” photos. In terms of content, we take an in-depth look at the DIY aspect of the scene—far removed from major labels, famous bands, and professional structures. We’ll provide insights into the underground scene, where left-wing politics, spontaneity, and “just do it” are the guiding principles.

The interviewees, just like Ronny and Ronja themselves, are millennials—born in the ’80s and ’90s and socialized within the scene around the year 2000. The 20 interviewees talk about themselves, how they experienced that time, what inspired them, what they find important about punk and DIY culture…and who or what made life difficult for them!

In addition to bands, event organizers, people from squats, and concertgoers also have their say. Because we don’t just want to hear the same old stories about aging musicians’ alcohol-fueled excesses; we want to convey a diverse picture of a subculture that’s still very much alive.

But it’s also meant to be personal and a bit nostalgic: We’ll dive into the past of the punk and underground scene, retrace the steps of our adolescence, and reminisce together. The interviewees, just like the documentary’s creators Ronny & Ronja, are all part of Generation Y and thus grew up in the scene in the early 2000s.

The screening will be accompanied by a DIY talk by Ronny and Ronja: “Just Do It—How Left-Wing Subculture Comes Alive Through Active Participation”
