Elisabeth Edl reads

A powerful portrait of a woman in a new translation: George Sand, alias Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin de Francueil, is one of the most dazzling writers of the 19th century. With her way of life and her works, the Frenchwoman represents both women's rights and socially critical themes. Elisabeth Edl presents her translation of George Sand's last novel "Nanon" about the French Revolution from the perspective of a peasant girl. The turmoil and confusion of the revolution fall into an 18th century pastoral. The novel describes Nanon's rise from an illiterate woman to a marquise. George Sand's work stands on equal footing with Flaubert and Stendhal, also translated by Edl; unconventional and provocative, it shows how great history is not only written by men.
