Reading and discussion

Why we are more united than divided: In her new, highly topical book on the politics of division and polarization in Germany, renowned journalist and author Gilda Sahebi dispels common myths and fake facts. Anyone looking at German society today might think that it is a country full of drama, conflict and division. That this is the case is a narrative that is politically generated and reinforced by the media. Gilda Sahebi exposes it as a lie, as an instrument of power by authoritarian forces. She demonstrates this in the relevant debates on social benefits, migration, gender and wokeness, war and peace and coronavirus. Studies show time and again that people are much happier in their own lives; they help and support each other and seek connection, not hatred. Where does the search for connection get lost on a social level? And what can we do to avoid giving the narrative of division space in our own lives?
Gilda Sahebi is a doctor and political scientist. She works as a freelance journalist specializing in racism, women's rights, the Middle East and science. She is an author for "taz" and "Spiegel", among others. Medium Magazine named her Political Journalist of the Year in 2022. She explains and classifies current political events via her social media channels and as a panelist on various talk shows. She has published "'Our Sword is Love' with S. FISCHER. The feminist revolt in Iran" and "How we teach ourselves racism. An analysis of German debates". Gilda Sahebi lives in Berlin.
