Cracked smartphone displays, distorted images, colorful pixel structures. It is only at the moment of disruption that our attention is drawn to the nature of the technical media that surround us every day, but without pushing themselves to the fore. As one of the youngest and most unpredictable art forms, glitch art celebrates the productive side of mistakes. As an artistic counter-movement to recognized forms of expression, image disturbances take their course from early photography through avant-garde film and video art to digital image media by being deliberately provoked or programmed. International artists critically question the media's closeness to reality, create their own worlds, uncover socio-political inequalities and, last but not least, make the invisible visible.
With works by JODI, Joan Jonas, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Rosa Menkman, Mame-Diarra Niang, Carsten Nicolai, Nam June Paik, Sondra Perry, Man Ray, Pipilotti Rist, Raoul Ubac and others.
