GODS.EXE

In the organizer's words:

The GODS.EXE exhibition is based on a fundamental assumption: religion is not something that lies outside of us, but arises from human experience. It arises from the need to deal with uncertainty, fear and the limits of our understanding.

In all cultures around the world, belief systems have formed to make sense of the uncontrollable. Death, illness, the forces of nature, coincidences and the transience of life awaken the constant need for explanations and structures. What we cannot explain is told. What seems uncontrollable is attributed to a greater whole. This common structure connects and separates us at the same time. It reveals something universal, but produces different and often contradictory belief systems.

The intention of this exhibition is not to preserve the divine as untouchable, but to bring these figures back into a human context. What has been elevated and distanced is to be reduced to what it has always been at its core: a reflection of human vulnerability, imagination and the attempt to cope with existence in an uncertain world.

The artists do not want to dismiss faith, but rather examine its origins and explore what remains when the divine is no longer considered sacrosanct, but is recognized as something created and maintained by man. The artists draw on existing religions, mythologies, pagan systems or entirely imaginary belief structures. What counts is not documentary accuracy, but the examination of the underlying pattern.
