Katerina Poladjan is the "master of succinct, allusive storytelling" (DLF), a "quiet star of contemporary German-language literature" (SWR). In her new novel (S. Fischer), she has Eli, an ageing film director in crisis, take a seat on the psychologist's couch. Eli unfolds his family history, which takes him through an entire century and across the European continent, from Odessa to Constantinople and Varna in Bulgaria to Rome. And so fragments of old Europe come together to form a cheerful and melancholy picture of the present. "The book closes. The pictures remain" (Berliner Zeitung).
