Dance in the Interstice

The ballet evening “Grey Area” brings together three choreographies, all of which explore the intangible: Bridget Breiner, the chief choreographer of Ballett am Rhein, turns her attention to the unfinished—the experiences of life that have no end but instead become part of us. Drawing on the music of Jeff Buckley, she explores in “Shards,” together with the company, the state of being in between: encounters and separations, closeness and distance, holding on and letting go.

At the heart of the three-part evening is David Dawson’s award-winning classic “The Grey Area,” which celebrates the elusive yet hopeful liminal space between ending and new beginning. With sweeping, free-flowing movements and great musical sensitivity, the choreography seems to defy gravity and celebrates the beauty of a moment.

The evening concludes with a work by Canadian choreographer Lesley Telford. At the heart of her choreography “Threshold of a Fall” lies the fragile relationship between humans and man-made systems. What appears stable and unshakable can reveal its vulnerability through the slightest shift.
