During the American Civil War, Lieutenant John Dunbar rides into battle despite a serious leg injury - and becomes a hero. He can now choose where he wants to be deployed. And chooses a run-down outpost in the South Dakota wilderness, finally alone with his horse Cisco, a wolf he names Sock - and the Sioux. Dunbar cautiously makes his first contact with the tribe, befriends the indigenous people and gains their trust. However, the idyll comes to an abrupt end when an army troop appears...
Kevin Costner, a superstar actor of the 80s, also took on the leading role in his seven-time Oscar-winning directorial debut. In contrast to the majority of classic westerns, the Native Americans in DANCING WITH THE WOLF are not discredited as savage savages. Costner succeeds in getting the (white) audience interested in and enthusiastic about indigenous culture.
