A film adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s most famous novel: Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by the wealthy General Sternwood, who is being blackmailed over the gambling debts of his younger daughter, Carmen. A former employee of Sternwood’s has also vanished without a trace. During his investigation, he discovers that the older daughter, Vivian, knows more than she admits. Marlowe stops at nothing to solve the case, and in the process finds himself caught between the degenerate upper class and the brutal world of organized crime.
