Gute und schlechte Moore im Landkreis Freising

Did you know that there are several moorland areas in the district of Freising? Together they cover over 5,000 hectares (or almost 7% of the area)! The best known is the Freisinger Moos, which is actually the second largest contiguous area of fenland in Bavaria. And where are the others?
Are moors good or bad? Both ;-) There are many reasons to consider moors important. For moorland plants and animals it is their habitat, for humans it is a recreational area, for living creatures in general it is a source of fresh air and pleasant temperatures when it is hot, and for our planet they were once an almost inexhaustible way of storing carbon dioxide from the air.
About a hundred years ago, the moors were drained to make them suitable for agriculture. This was the right thing to do at the time, but it was not realized that the stored carbon would start to escape back into the atmosphere. Nowadays, it is an important task to restore peatland soils to a state where they emit fewer greenhouse gases - and also provide fresh air, recreation and a habitat for peatland biodiversity.
How can peatlands be restored to a healthy state? Where is this already happening, what is planned, and is it something that is decided in private or is it a task that many people are working on together? The district's peatland officer, Judith Jabs-Ingenhaag, talks about this and also leaves room for questions and discussion.
