Sicily, mythical prehistory. The shepherd boy Aci and the sea nymph Galatea love each other, but the one-eyed giant Polifemo claims the beautiful water creature for himself. Rejected by Galatea, he brutally ends young Aci's life in an act of jealousy - until he is reunited with his beloved through his transformation into a river. Loosely based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, George Frideric Handel's Serenata from 1708 tells more than a pastoral love story: In the showdown between mythical powers, natural forces and human passion, director and puppet theater maker Janni Younge, whose unmistakably poetic imagery has caused a worldwide sensation, and her South African company expose questions as universal as they are topical about the fragile relationship between man, nature and habitat. The musical part of this unique production, developed especially for the Pierre Boulez Saal, will be performed by the baroque specialists of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and a first-class ensemble of singers.Sponsored by the Cultural Administration of the State of Berlin.
