Haut und Hülle

In the organizer's words:

Fri, Sept. 4 | 7:00 p.m. Exhibition Opening

The skin envelops the body and serves as a barrier to the outside world, protecting it from cold and moisture. As a living organ, the skin is vulnerable. It tells stories of life in many ways and serves as a point of contact for perception and touch.
Over the past year and a half, 21 Blaumeier artists have explored the meanings of skin and the body’s outer layer, of fragility and protection, approaching these themes artistically in a variety of ways. They began by drawing portraits of one another, then studied human anatomy through life drawing, and created sculptures in a papier-mâché workshop. Their works depict suits of armor, garments from long-forgotten cultures, wedding dresses, Werder jerseys, jewelry (including the jewelry stolen from the Louvre), and demonstrate that clothing is not only a form of covering but also an element that shapes identity. In the animal kingdom, thick hides and plumage offer protection. When the world becomes too much for someone, it’s their own bedspread—but bark, ice sheets, and the Earth’s crust are also forms of covering. Inside, thoughts, elements, and feelings swirl—and the question quietly arises: how is a covering cared for and preserved?
