Joseph Haydn was long responsible for the festive culture at the Esterházy royal court in Eisenstadt, where he composed the opera "L'isola disabitata" in 1779. When Haydn was no longer in court service, he created the symphony "Mit dem Paukenschlag" for a guest performance in London in 1791. Our program takes you from courtly Viennese classicism via the liberal arts in bourgeois London back to London's royal court culture: George Frideric Handel, two generations older than Haydn, wrote his "Water Music" for a splendid Baroque festive moment: on 17 July 1717, King George I of England and his entourage took a pleasure cruise on the Thames in London. In his golden barge, the king floated across the water surrounded by festive sounds, and Handel's music preserves the atmosphere of this grandiose voyage to this day.
