In the organizer's words:

He himself called it "the most important thing I ever did": Duke Ellington, the founder of the modern big band style and extraordinarily prolific composer, put together three "Sacred Concerts" for solo voices, choir and big band between 1965 and 1973, in which he drew on the European tradition of sacred music. Although major works by Ellington, they are heard far too rarely due to their genre diversity. Michael Schneider and the Salzburg Bach Choir as well as the Mozarteum Salzburg Big Band have now compiled a cross-section of Ellington's suites and, together with two shorter, more recent works, have formed an evening that combines piety and vocal-instrumental brilliance with the verve of a gospel service.
