Three weeks before Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's death in spring 2012, Benjamin Appl visited him for lessons at his home on Lake Starnberg. The greatest lieder singer of the 20th century was not only a role model and mentor to the Regensburg baritone, who had previously studied in New York and London, but also a close friend. Appl was able to sift through countless private documents from his estate while researching his musical tribute to the 100th anniversary of his birth. The result is a portrait that is as personal as it is multi-faceted. Using songs, recitations and narrated events, it traces the stages in the life of this exceptional artist.
